HEFO is a Faith Based on-governmental Organization (NGO) that was formed by Christian Churches
in Nkayi and Bulawayo.
The vision at HEFO is long-term and aimed at empowering communities to be self-reliant
and be able to manage their livelihoods today and in the future, in a sustainable manner.
Our mission is to empower communities in Nkayi District, to permanently improve the quality of their well-being.

Through Nkayi District community driven projects, we facilitate;
1. Strengthening the governance of Nkayi District community structures that the HEFO program engages with.
2. Establish and strengthen the communities’ linkages with other development partners,
including Government departments.
3. Make clean drinking water accessible within a 3km radius through drilling boreholes along with the construction of weirs, small dams and roof water harvesting.
4. Adoption of climate smart conservation agricultural practices.
5. Creation and promotion of gardens that produce nutrient-dense foods.
6. Establish viable Crop-livestock businesses.
Nkayi District of Matabeleland North Province situated in natural region four – an area prone to erratic spatial and temporal rainfall distribution, which often leads to dry spells and arid/drought-like conditions. Mean rainfall in this region is 450-650 mm, an amount insufficient for most cash cropping. As a result, livestock and drought-resistant fodder crop production are the major economic engines in the largely rural areas selected for programme implementation. These conditions make the districts highly vulnerable to poverty. In addition, with a political and cultural history sometimes perceived as counter to the dominant power structures in the country, the district is generally regarded as among the least developed areas of Zimbabwe.s.

HEFO,having recognized the needs and challenges faced by these communities as highlighted above, designed and implemented the Community Livelihoods Recovery Programme (CLRP) and scaled up its work in 2007 in Nkayi District initially covering two wards.
Similar activities were extended to Bulawayo in 2009 under Protracted Relief Programme (PRP) funded by DFID, covering seven wards and Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC) covering 5 wards in Bulawayo.
To date, in the Nkayi District, HEFO’s activities cover 5 wards on a Development Area programme for 10 years in partnership with both Tear Fund Australia and Action Aid International Zimbabwe (AAIZ).

STEWARDSHIP – Holding out the lamp of development for all, believing and adopting the steps towards restoring the dignity of communities HEFO works with.
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATIVENESS – Basing all our approaches not on what has been tried before, but to consider novel ways of solving community problems.
ACCOUNTABILITY – HEFO holds itself responsible for reporting to all her stakeholders whatever she is doing in their areas. This must be achieved through involving them at all levels so as to increase buy-in, ownership, and dignity of life for all.
EQUITY – HEFO aims to enable equal opportunities for all, until all are dignified citizens.
TRANSPARENCY – HEFO values doing everything possible to roll out her plans and budgets to rights holders and duty bearers alike. The Projects Management Committee is one practical way HEFO has chosen to increase community involvement in the development process.
SOLIDARITY AND PARTNERSHIPS – HEFO will always stand with the secluded and vulnerable community groups, and with other like-minded organisations, so as to amplify her efforts on paving ways for enhanced community dignity

Ox left for dead between Njombolo and Dakamela wards – Nkayi
Ox left for dead between Njombolo and Dakamela wards, the solution to help minimize livestock deaths is to build stock-feed sheds, that will ensure animals affected by drought and weight loss are given survival feed. Once the animals gain weight they can be finished off on feed and prepared for sale at the market, thus allowing the owner to realize income from the animal
Mr and Mrs Tshabalala – Mfanovelayo Village, Ward 16
This couple is in Mfanovelayo Village, Ward 16. They are known for practicing Conservation Agriculture (CA). At the time of visit (12 February 2021), the couple had 1.5ha of maize under CA, and ½ha of sorghum grown using CA. These farmers started practicing CA in 2005 and they have not looked back since then.
Mr Wilton Mlotshwa – Ward 28
Mr. Wilton Mlotshwa – Ward 28, pictured here standing inside one of the open ditches that he excavated. The open ditches or sink holes are excavations that are constructed infield and along buffer strips to harvest and control storm water, conserve the soil and subsequently combat effects of drought and/or highly erosive rain – which are a common occurrence in the Nkayi region
